More about the program

The Alliance for HOPE International (Alliance) was founded in 1999 by Casey Gwinn. A former San Diego City Attorney who was frustrated with the siloed approach to service provision for survivors of domestic violence. He recognized that survivors often had to navigate multiple systems to receive the help they needed. Which could be overwhelming, intimidating, and re-traumatizing. Gwinn believed that by co-locating services in a safe and accessible location. Survivors could receive the support they needed more efficiently and with less stress.

The Family Justice Center model was first introduced in San Diego in 2002 and has since spread across the United States and internationally. Today, the FJCA boasts a membership of over 140 centers in the United States and abroad. These centers serve as a lifeline to survivors and their families. And simultaneously offer a range of services, including legal assistance, shelter, counseling, and safety planning.

The FJCA provides technical assistance, training, and support to its member centers, which helps them to create and sustain high-quality and culturally responsive services for survivors. The Alliance’s training curriculum is evidence-based, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered, and emphasizes collaboration, safety, and empowerment. The FJCA also conducts research and evaluation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Family Justice Center model. Increase awareness about domestic and sexual violence, and inform policy and practice.

The Alliance for HOPE International, through its Family Justice Center Alliance program undoubtedly has transformed the way services are provided to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The co-location of services ensures that survivors receive the support they need in a timely and efficient manner, and reduces the risk of revictimization. The FJCA’s commitment to collaboration, client-centeredness, and empowerment is integral to its success. Its work has been instrumental in increasing access to services for survivors across the United States and beyond.
